Indoor Premier League Final

Inter Milan vs. Manchester United

In the final, we saw Inter take on Man U.  After Man U's stunning upset of Liverpool two weeks ago, they looked to upend Inter Milan in the Final.  With Tony Fortier-Bensen netting a quick goal, Manchester United started quick.  Reed Dufour then had a beautiful turnaround shot for the second goal of the match.  But Scott Naccari would net two quick goals to bring Inter Milan back into a tie with Manchester United.  However, from that moment onward, Manchester United would dominate the Black and Blues.  Tony Fortier-Bensen moved from the goal and scored for the Red Devils, then Chris Winker scored, then Reed Dufour added another.  It was quickly 5-2 before the half.  After halftime, Tony Fortier-Bensen would seal Inter's fate with two goals, and playing outstanding in the net.  As time expired Evan Martin scored his first IPL goal, putting the exclamation point on Manchester's improbable playoff run.  Final: 8-2.

Tony Fortier-Bensen wins the Playoff MVP with his superb goalkeeping and his dominance on the field.  I would like to thank everyone who made this possible, especially Brandon who got us the time slot and the field.  Thanks to everyone for consistently coming out and playing and paying, it was fun.  Thanks to Donald for keeping score and Danielle Raymond for statistics.  Thanks to Jorge Abadin for taking pictures and everyone who participated.

Semifinals

Here is a wrapup of the two semifinal playoff matches:

Inter Milan vs. Chelsea

In the first playoff match of the day, the second seed Inter Milan took on the third seeded Chelsea.  Chelsea was the only team to defeat the Black and Blues this season, being 2-0 against them in the regular season.  Chelsea continued their dominance of Inter with a goal from Adam Fournier to start the match.  Will Fitzpatrick would equalize to make it 1-1 and add a second to give Inter their first lead over Chelsea for the year.  Bailey Arnett would not allow this to last with a goal of his own, making it 2-2.  Cal Abadin then added two goals himself, spacing Inter's lead to 4-2 right before the half.  However, a ricochet off of Craig Taylor and a miss by goalie Andrew Sigle gave Chelsea two quick goals before the half to tie the match at 4-4.  In the second half, Will Fitzpatrick and Cal Abadin would score 6 goals on the sluggish Chelsea defense, and with a minute and a half remaining, Inter took what seemed to be the game winning lead.  But, Bailey Arnett struck to make it a 10-9 score.  Then, with 10 seconds left, Cal Abadin mistakenly booted the ball, and Jonathan Lee gave a heave to Adam Fournier who scored with under 2 seconds left.

In penalty kicks, Cal Abadin would shoot first for the Black and Blues.  He would net his shot in the lower left corner to put Inter ahead 1-0.  However, Donald Ward powered a shot past Andrew Sigle to tie the score at 1-1.  Both Will Fitzpatrick and Adam Fournier would miss the next two shots, keeping it at 1-1.  Craig Taylor then overpowered his shot, going a good 5 feet over the crossbar and into the netting.  Bailey Arnett came to shoot, and Andrew Sigle could not grab hold as it hit the back of the net, giving Chelsea a 2-1 lead.  Scott Naccari narrowly missed off the crossbar, keeping it at 2-1.  The pressure was on.  Chelsea had two chances to score once to win the match.  Nathan Cedor tried to catch Andrew Sigle on his toes by going straight down the middle but he saw it all the way.  Andrew Sigle came to the penalty spot and scored in the lower left corner to tie it at 2-2.  It was down to Jonathan Lee.  He beat Andrew Sigle all the way, but hit off the post and missed the target.

The match would then go to sudden death penalties.  Inter selected the calm and collected Will Fitzpatrick to take possibly their most important shot of the season.  He buried it past Jonathan Lee, meaning Chelsea must make their next shot or go home.  Chelsea selected Bailey Arnett to take the penalty.  The shot went a little left, and Andrew Sigle was there to keep it out as Inter Milan celebrated on the pitch, winning the match 3-2 in penalties.

Liverpool vs. Manchester United

In what seemed like a very unbalanced match, the final match was top seeded Liverpool facing last place Manchester United.  Manchester United came into the match not having won since September 12th, Week 1 of the season.  The match was goalless for the first 6 minutes until Sal Maffei made a costly mistake on the defensive side, turning the ball over where Tony Fortier-Bensen made him pay.  The outstanding keeping of Jorge Abadin could not overcome a 1-on-1 with one of the best in the league, and the Red Devils had broken the deadlock.  Shortly after, Tony Fortier-Bensen passed around Jorge Abadin and assisted Matthew Whelan to make the score 2-0.  Then, Jorge Abadin made his own costly mistake and could not corral the ball as it rolled into the back of his own net.  Man U had a lead of 3-0 going into the half.  In the second half, Corey Schneider scored quickly to make it 3-1, and the Reds looked to have life.  But, this was not so, as Manchester United would go on to dominate the second half, scoring 6 goals to Liverpool's 2.  Manchester United played like the team everyone expected, shutting down Liverpool and scoring goals almost at will.  Jorge Abadin was very impressive in the net but the Liverpool defense made numerous costly mistakes and almost gave away goals.  Matthew Whelan had his first hat trick and Tony Fortier-Bensen had his second hat trick as Manchester United downed the top-seeded Liverpool team to advance to the Final.

The Final is set: #2 Inter Milan vs. #4 Manchester United.

Round 2, Week 3

Posted by Cal on November 20, 2010 at 3:07 PM Comments comments (0)

As the final weekend of the season came upon us, the fight for first place came down to the final two games.

Manchester United vs. Liverpool

In the first game of the day, Man U was home to Liverpool.  After a tough loss to Inter, Liverpool was looking to bounce back to try and regain first place in the standings.  Sal Maffei opened the scoring for Liverpool, with Jon Riera soon following on a very impressive strike from distance.  Sal Maffei added another goal as Liverpool was out to a quick 3-0 lead.  After removing Tony Fortier-Bensen from goal, he moved to forward where he would score 3 goals and bring the Red Devils to within 2 at the half.  However, the Reds of Liverpool could not have been more dominant in the second half.  Outscoring their opposition 10-2, Kyle Fasullo had a career day by netting 9 goals for the Reds (8 in the second half alone).  Jorge Abadin stepped it up in the net to keep the Red Devils at bay and Sal Maffei finally broke through again, scoring four, as the Reds pummeled Manchester United, 15-5.

Inter Milan vs. Chelsea

After watching the first match and knowing what they must do, Inter Milan came to face Chelsea.  Chelsea was without Nathan Cedor and Donald Ward, replaced by Chase LaCombe and D.J. Hymel, respectively.  Inter came out flat, scoring only one goal in the first half (which was off of a miscue by keeper Jonathan Lee), and Chelsea took a commanding 6-1 lead heading into the break.  After the half, Will Fitzpatrick struck quickly to bring Inter within four.  However, Bailey Arnett could not be contained, as he added two more to Chelsea's tally.  Out of frustration, Scott Naccari left the net and switched positions with forward Cal Abadin.  Scott would later score and Cal Abadin would give up a goal, as Chelsea would go on to victory, 9-5.

With the season over, the playoff seeds have been decided.  With a monstrous +26 goal differential for Liverpool, they take first place over Inter Milan.  Inter takes second, Chelsea comes in third with a 3-3 record, and Manchester United finishes in last place, at 1-5.  The playoffs begin December 4th, check the schedule section for the times and uniforms.

Other notes: Kyle Fasullo was the high man scoring a league-high 9 goals in today's match... Scott Naccari scored his first goal of the season in Inter's loss... With Scott Naccari's goal, Inter became the only team with all 5 players on the original roster to score... Golden Boot and Best Goalie winners will be announced later... Thanks to Danielle Raymond for keeping the statistics!

Liverpool vs. Inter Milan

In the first match of the day, the highly awaited matchup between 1st place Liverpool and 2nd place Inter Milan took place.  Without Will Fitzpatrick, Inter took in Brandon Lacour as a replacement.  Lacour started things off with a quick goal to put the Black and Blues up 1-0.  However, Kyle Fasullo would add a goal and Jon Riera would score his 4th goal in two matches off a ricochet as Liverpool took a 2-1 lead.  Brandon Lacour would score again, as would Kyle Fasullo, as the match headed to the half at 3-2.  In the second half Inter would dominate the Reds, outscoring them 5-2 and really having their defense step up.  Scott Naccari was outstanding in the net and Jorge Abadin had his first poor performance (even though he only gave up 7 goals) as Inter pulled out a victory 7-5.

Manchester United vs. Chelsea

In the second match of the day, the Red Devils of Manchester took on the Blues of Chelsea.  Both teams looking for their second victory of the season, Man U started off quick with a goal from Reed Dufour.  Bailey Arnett would strike back, but Matthew Whelan (in his first full game in 2 matches) would give Man U the lead once more.  However, Chelsea took the lead going in to the half, riding Bailey Arnett's 4 first half goals.  In the second half, it was all Chelsea as they continued their scoring ways, netting 4 goals (2 coming from Bailey Arnett, 1 from Nathan Cedor, and 1 from Adam Fournier) as Chelsea moved up to 3rd place in their victory over the Red Devils.

Other notes: 5 goals in one match is the lowest posted total for Liverpool this season... Bailey Arnett was the high scorer with 6 goals... Chris Winker scored his first goal of the season in the closing seconds of Man U's loss... Jonathan Lee scored this week's own goal...  Inter Milan moved into sole possession of first place with their victory this weekend... Thanks to Danielle Raymond for keeping score and the statistics, and Donald Ward for filming!

The highlight video can be viewed here.

Inter Milan vs. Manchester United

In the first match of the day, Inter Milan took on the Red Devils of Man U.  Both teams suffering from missing players, Inter had to make due without Will Fitzpatrick (replaced by Kevin Seay), and Man U had to play without leading scorer Tony Fortier-Bensen and Midfielder Matthew Whelan (replaced by Bear Tucker and Grant Riera).  In a very slow match, Inter opened the scoring with a goal from Cal Abadin, assisted by Kevin Seay.  However, Bear Tucker would strike back for Man U with a goal from distance to beat the Inter keeper.  Kevin Seay then added a goal, but Bear Tucker scored once again.  Cal Abadin broke the 2-2 deadlock to make it 3-2 before the half.  The entire match was full of missed opportunities from Inter, as Chris Winker made a few impressive saves.  In the second half, Inter slowly but surely pulled away, with 3 goals from Cal Abadin and 2 from Kevin Seay as Inter sweeps the season series against Manchester United.  Manchester United continues their scoring funk, scoring only five.  Since the first match (when they scored 13), Man U has not scored 13 in their previous three matches combined. Final: 8-5.

Liverpool vs. Chelsea

In the day's second match, the Reds from Liverpool took on the Blues from Chelsea.  With Inter's win, Liverpool looked to keep pace with the Black and Blues and set up a showdown in the second to last week of the season.  Liverpool was without leading striker Kyle Fasullo (Bear Tucker was his replacement).  Chelsea was also without Jonathan Lee and Nathan Cedor (replaced by Stephen Knecht and Nick Lonergan).  Defender Corey Schneider opened the scoring with his third goal of the year.   However, Nick Lonergan would net one, along with Bailey Arnett, to tie the match at two.  But Sal Maffei would add two goals before the half as Liverpool took a 4-2 advantage.  In the second half, it was all Liverpool.  Corey Schneider would score 3 to get the Texas Hat Trick and Jon Riera would have his own hat trick as the two defenders carried Liverpool to an 11-5 victory.

Other notes: Scott Naccari had his first own goal this week... Tony Fortier-Bensen is not as good of a camera man as he thinks... Jon Riera scored a hat trick as his first career goals... The seven goals scored by LIverpool is the most by a defensive combination this season... Liverpool and Inter face off for first place in three weeks... Thanks to Danielle Raymond for keeping the stats and score!

REMINDER: Due to the fact that October has 5 weekends, we will not play again for another THREE weeks.
